Hikingsouth Hike of the Week

Rabun Bald Hike on the Bartram Trail, GA

August 23, 2016

This week's hike was on the Bartram Trail near Sky Valley, GA Trail to the 2nd highest peak in Georgia - 4,696 ft Rabun Bald.

HIKERS: John Anderson, Mike Bell, John Bellamy, June Bellamy, Ray Clark, Joe Collins, Mike Jones, Tony Presley and Vic Robson .

TRAIL INFORMATION - Parking at Kelsey Mountain Road, there is a connector trail leading up to the Bartram Trail and on up to the summit of Rabun Bald. The connector trail is marked with a green blaze.

The terrain is strenuous due to a large elevation gain but we rate it only moderately strenuous since it is a short hike of 4 miles round-trip.

Directions: Take Hwy. 441 N from Clayton, GA through Dillard, GA and turn right onto GA 246 / NC 106 toward Highlands, NC. Drive about 7 miles and turn right at the old Scaly Mtn. Ski Slope (Hale Ridge Rd.). Go approximately 3 miles and look for Kelsey Mountain Road and turn left and drive to the end of the pavement and you will see the access trail on your right.

Another great day for a hike! Cloudy to partly cloudy, cool with temperatures in the upper 60's. Hiking distance - 4+ miles.

WILDFLOWERS IN BLOOM: Horse Balm, Beggar Lice, Coreopsis, Thin-leaved Sunflower, Silverrod, Phlox, Goldenrod, Joe Pye Weed and Wood Aster .

BIRDS IDENTIFIED: Pileated Woodpecker, White-breasted Nuthatch, Cardinal, Blue Jay, Pine Warbler and American Crow.
